Celebrating her 60th birthday was also a chance to renew their vows.
GIRLY & ELIJAH1

Girly Martha Mathunjwa (60) recalls Elijah Mathunjwa (63) having a building project at his sister-in-law’s house. “They needed help carrying the wooden beams, so they called me to help,” she says. “That’s when we first met.”

He took an interest in her and a meeting was arranged. “He started telling me he loved me in sign language,” Girly says.  “I was confused, I didn’t know how to respond. He asked if I couldn’t communicate in sign language. I needed some time to pray and think about it.”

Her answer came to her in her sleep.

“A voice came and told me that this was my husband.

I had told myself I’d never get married again. I tried it before, and it didn’t work out. Two weeks later, he came back to find out what I’d decided. I said yes. God had already spoken. What could I say? I loved him. There were days I couldn’t sleep because my love for him was overflowing.”

They got married in 1996, but Girly admits it was rushed. “I didn’t  wear a white dress, just a two-piece suit and he wore his.”

Elijah and his family taught her sign language. “Because we were in love, God put everything together quickly,” she says. “Everything came together. Everything came together perfectly, especially in the bedroom. He’s a complete man. There’s nothing missing.”

They renewed their vows at the same time she marked her milestone birthday. “I turned 60 and had never been in a white dress. So I said I’d wear one now.”
