As Women’s Month in South Africa draws to a close, we round up some of the inspiring quotes about, well, women that we’ve heard from our guests throughout this month.

Berita on receiving and giving support in the industry

"For me, my lines are always open, my friends know I talk to [everyone]. And I also talk to Yvonne Chaka Chaka who’s a call away from me [whom] I bounce off a lot of ideas. Because for me, we are the new breed, we are the new Miriam Makebas, Dolly Rathebes. We have to hold each other’s hands and move together."

Moozlie on women in hip-hop

"It’s all about the sisterhood in hip hop. And it’s a real thing…

It’s about genuinely being supportive, knowing there is someone else in the industry who’s going through the same thing as I’m going through and [saying]: ‘Yo! I see you; I recognise you, and I respect you."

Moonchild on her deep connection with fellow musician, Busiswa, throughout her career

"That’s my girl!

Both me and her were different girls in poetry, in doing hip hop and then we just went and did our own thing. From poetry, we went and had our own thing."

Sithelo the DJ and her experience as a newbie in the DJ industry

"I’m fairly new in the industry so I can speak from the time I’ve been in the industry. I’ve received so much support especially from ladies in the industry.

They’re very welcoming of other DJs that are coming into the industry and willing to motivate you and teach you other things you need to learn.

So, I’ve received such great support from a lot of ladies and I’ve seen a lot of female DJs coming into the industry now which is really, really good."

It goes to show that together, women really can do it all. 👏
