Pretoria causes social media mayhem

The nation's capital delivered laughs by the truckload last night and the whole Twitterverse was here for it

23 July 2018

Pretoria has long had a bit of a reputation for blessing us with colourful characters and some of the funniest auditions in Idols SA history. That said, it wasn't all fun and games because our contestants this year managed to equal Durban's effort with a whopping, 24 Golden tickets. Returnees dominated the night (both good and nightmarish) but we also observed the same trend torward very young and brilliant auditionees much like in previous cities.

1532347372 28 young ladies

Case in point? 18-year-old Ntokozo and 16-year-old Bophelo who both scored four yeses thanks to their beaming smiles, stunning looks and impressive vocals. These young ladies proved without a doubt that impeccable control, maturity and razor-sharp focus aren't the reserve of the more advanced in age.

We also got our fair share of ecletic performers with interesting stage names. While many turned out to be a lot less inspiring than their titles suggested (we're looking at you King K and Sheyn Voetseeg) others surprised with refreshing takes on the classics we love. King B & Wattahmelon come to mind here with the former managing to not only move people with his voice but melt hearts with his loveable personality too.

We also saw plenty familiar faces but few as recognisable as Lucky "Fororo" Xaba who returned to the audition room with another uncouth banger titled, 'Gwafefe'. We won't traumatise you with the details but in case you're wondering whether Twitter was feeling this come back...

Also returning but certainly not in the same company as Lucky were former contestants, Blessed, Ndumi, Mnqobi, Que and Lebo. Randall put them under serious pressure when he asked that they audition altogether without warning but instead of crumbling under the pressure they all WENT OFF! Perhaps it's a testament to the excellent training they got at Theatre Week?
