Every Sunday evening TV fans and music lovers alike all come together as one to enjoy one of Mzansi’s most beloved shows, Idols! They share in the judging, the laughs and the joys as some rise to the top while others dreams are dashed. Yet there are some crucial hurdles our Idols hopefuls have to overcome before gracing our screens that we seldom stop to consider. It’s no simple task becoming a superstar, here are some of the odds they go against.

The Courage

It’s hard enough singing for friends and family. What more in front of three of South Africa’s most revered judges? That’s why the very first hurdle hopefuls jump over is their own self belief. It takes an incredible amount of courage to wake up one morning and set your sights on conquering Idols!

The Treck

Once they’ve decided to put it all on the line one of the simplest yet most daunting challenges is simply making it to the audition venue! Thanks to the Telkom Pop Up auditions, Idols is now reaching more cities than ever but some Idols still travel incredible distances just to prove to the judges they deserve their place on the Idols stage. Take Thatho for instance, the 23 year old stunned guest judge DJ Cleo went he reveal how he had travelled a mind blowing 14hours to make it to the Cape Town auditions! Talk about dedication! Thankfully the sacrifice paid off as he clinched a golden ticket.

The Wait

At any given moment on audition day an Idols hopeful is one of thousands of fellow big dreamers. This massive turnout means one very key thing: it takes time! Contestants can wait hours for their turn as the judges meticulously comb through the masses for the next singing sensation. No wonder the judges sing praises to those who can still shine bright at the end of an arduous day!

The Nerves

Perhaps the toughest challenge yet, the mind often plays the worst of tricks on singers once they finally step in front of the judges. Only those with nerves of steel can defeat the millions of thoughts, doubts and worries flying around in their minds and push it all aside to put their best foot forward.

The Judges

Believe it or not, the judges are probably the easiest of all odds to beat in the journey to becoming a South African Idols. Even behind Randalls steely stare is a judge who simply wants to see you flourish. That however hasn’t stopped a potential Idols or two from letting their fear of the judges get the better of them. For those however who can look past the larger than life personas of those before them, the judges soon become invaluable mentors and teachers, guiding them down the path of success.

So with all that it mind, it truly is a remarkable feat when young singers triumph and go on to claim their dreams and live their destinies!
