Somizi Mhlongo-Motaung

Back for a sweet sixteenth season: the evergreen Somizi (now with double-barreled surname)!

It was always obvious that “Somgaga” would plant his heart and his roots firmly in entertainment. After all, he is born of his late parents, Comedian Ndaba Mhlongo and veteran actress, Mary Twala. As a young actor, Somizi took on memorable roles in movies and musicals including the South African treasure, Sarafina. His talents have transcended the big screen, with a stint on London’s West End having pride of place in his colourful resume.

These days, being the vanguard of South African entertainment on Reality Television, in musical theatre and choreography, is keeping this maverick extra busy. We're super-keen to see what hilarious antics, splendiforous vocabulary and "wooshem" moments he delivers this time around.

In a testament to his passion for his craft & incredible work-ethic, Somizi has shouldered the chaos of 2020 and even personal loss to premiere a brand-new cooking show, 'Dinner With Somizi', celebrate his marriage for a third time, get Botox for the first time, appear in Somizi & Mohale: The Union on Showmax, and more. “I’ve dished up more than I can chew!” he admits.

On the impact of Idols SA, he notes the unmatched production and the unprecedented successes of previous Idols contenders like Shekhinah, Kyle Deutsch, Amanda Black and Musa.
