Legends in our life time

Celebrate your #LivingLegends with Mzansi Magic Music!

07 June 2018

They say that legends are born and not made but we’ve certainly watched a lot of Mzansi artists grow to iconic statuses. Mzansi Magic Music is paying homage to musicians who have endeared us and continue to. Entertainers who are proudly homegrown and dare to dream while daring to be themselves.

These are our living legends and we’ll be celebrating a handpicked few in the weeks to come.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo

It goes without saying that this Isicathamiya group is one of Mzansi’s finest. The acappella group has garnered fans and followers from across the world because of their unmatched style of performance that’s as compelling as it is gentle. We’re inspired by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, who continue to fly the flag of traditional music up.

Here are a few of Africa’s gems!

Oilver Mtukudzi – Harare

His music lives in the heart of many African with his distinct fusion of tradional instrumentals and contemporary jazz. Mtukudzi’s more popular tracks include “Neria” and “Wasakara”. In his latest album he continues to soothe and encourage with a gospel collection since “The Tuku Years”.

Todii

Angelique Kidjo – Benini

The Beninese singing siren has given us affirming music aplenty since she burst into our homes with hits like “We we” and “Batonga”! Her music steeped both in her diverse cultural influences and cosmopolitan edge, continues to inspire creative independence and African pride.

Agolo

Salif Keita – Mali

A renowned icon who is also of royal Malian lingeage. Salif Keita is indeed a living African legend with a body of work that is experimental while inhabiting an unmistakably continental identity. What more can we say!

Yamore

Ringo Madlingozi – SA

Surely he is one of Mzansi’s original afro soul crooners? Ringo gave us one precious love song after the other and taught many the rare skill of courting a lady! His magnetic voice is still doing the things.

Sondela

Mafikizolo – SA

As Africans we have rhythm pulsing through our veins so when dance-group Mafikizolo, launched onto the scene with that Afro-Kwaito flair we all know and love, they became instant legends. Thankfully, they’re still making us dance

Femi Kuti – Nigeria

He is the son of Nigerian heavyweight musician, Fela Kuti and boy, is he following in his father’s footsteps. On the same token, however, Femi has carved his own musical legacy that befits him an icon’s status.

Awilo Longomba – Congo

Awilo is a Pan African all star! There is not a single soul that’s graced this continent whom his vibrant brand of African music has not touched. Also hailing from a musical family, he continues to break barriers and inspire.
