After several weeks of grueling elimination rounds, Motswako rapper JR's Mpumalanga choir was crowned winners of Clash of the Choirs Season 3 tonight, in a spectacular live event held at Global Access Studios in Johannesburg.

Taking the reins from the defending champions, KwaZulu-Natal, Team JR beat songstress Kelly Khumalo's Gauteng choir with the highest Clash of the Choirs voting record to date, claiming the R1 million cash prize, with an additional R250 000 going to their chosen charity: SOS Children’s Village.

Team JR paved their winning streak throughout the season, having never found themselves in a single Clash-Off. One memorable performance from the choir was during the Sarafina Challenge, when the choir’s rendition of Sechaba brought judge, Dr. Rebecca Malope to tears.

In a season that was a closely contested competition between the original seven choirs, the show brought together an array of talented voices from across the country, showcasing a choral musical display of epic proportions.

"It truly is remarkable, looking at the amount of talent Mzansi has to offer. That's the core of what Clash of the Choirs is about: unearthing and celebrating the musical richness of our country. Congratulations to Team JR on their win, and a big thank you to all the choirmasters, their choirs, the musicians, the judges, and everyone who participated in this season, making it the biggest and most successful season to date”, says Nkateko Mabaso, M-Net's Director for Local Entertainment Channels.

“On behalf of Metropolitan I would like to wholeheartedly congratulate the winning choir,” says Llewellyn Allen, Head of Brand at Metropolitan. “The competition was tough, but their hard work and determination paid off. We are proud to have been involved in the show for a third year running – it is truly rewarding to see talented people progressing and being empowered to succeed.”

The voting results were verified by auditing firm Deloitte, and the winner was chosen by the audience through SMS and WeChat votes. Season 3 proved Clash of the Choirs’ most successful season in terms of votes received as well as viewership figures.

An additional R50 000 has been awarded to the runner-up charity, Chubby Chums, by Metropolitan.
