Caster Semenya

Caster Semenya is a superstar athlete who won gold in the 800m events at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. She also managed this at both the 2009 and 2017 World Championships. In 2016, she won all three of the 400m, 800m, and 1500m South African titles – within four hours of one another. Married to her long-term partner Violet Raseboya, she’s also an advocate for queer sexuality.

Kagiso Rabada

Kagiso Rabada is a cricketer who made his limited overs debut for South Africa is 2014, and his test debut a year later. By January 2018, he was ranked the number one bowler in the world in both formats. In July, he became the youngest ever bowler to get to 150 wickets. This year he won six awards at the Cricket South Africa annual dinner. He was also named by esteemed cricket guide Wisden as the best young player in the world.

Percy Tau

Percy Tau is a footballer who’s on the books of Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion, as well as Bafana Bafana. He began his career at Mamelodi Sundowns and in over 100 games for the club, he won the league twice, won the CAF Champions League, and was named Footballer of the Year. In the 2017/18 season, his eleven goals helped Sundowns to the league title. This led to a R50 million move to Brighton, a South African transfer record.

Pitso Mosimane

Pitso Mosimane is a former footballer for Mamelodi Sundowns, where he is now coach and current manager. He won multiple titles during his tenure as coach at SuperSport between 2001 and 2007 and was caretaker coach for Bafana Bafana for seven games in 2007, before landing the permanent position in 2010. In 2016, with Sundowns, he won the league title and Nedbank Cup, making him the only coach to make a clean sweep of all trophies in the PSL era.

Siya Kolisi

Siya Kolisi is a rugby player and the first black captain of the Spingboks. He grew up tough in the impoverished Zwide township near Port Elizabeth, but impressed scouts and secured a scholarship at Grey High School. He made his debut for Western Province in 2011 and was elevated to the Stormers’ squad the next year. He made his Springbok debut in 2013 and was named Man of the Match on debut. In 2017, he was made captain of the Stormers. In 2018, he was made Springbok captain, the first black player in its 126-year history. He just captained the team that beat the mighty All Blacks in New Zealand.
