Ten seasons in, and #OurPerfectWedding is still a firm favourite for Sunday night TV viewing. With 300 episodes (and counting) in the bag, Mzansi’s favourite wedding show has come a long way!

OUR PERFECT WEDDING THEN:

Humble beginnings

Where were you when Thuli Thabethe kicked off as its first presenter back in the day? Those were the days, hey!? Over the years, we’ve had Tumi Morake, Ayanda Mpama, Brenda Ngxoli, Phumeza Mdabe, Jessica Nkosi, Thembisa Mdoda, Lerato Moloi, Nomsa Buthelezi–Shezi helping couples tick off all the items on their Wish List and have the wedding of their dreams.

Presenter Search Competition

Half way through Season 7, production felt it was time to switch things up a notch. This made way for its first ever Presenter Search Competition, which was won by Kayise Ngqula.

A year later, Vele Manenje took over, followed by the current presenter Khanyisa Titus. We caught up with them, and here’s what they had to say about being part of this successful show:

Fond memories

Khanyisa says it’s definitely the Canze wedding, which aired in May 2020. “Margaret is deaf and Diyoko has a speech impairment. This couple proved to us that true love has no boundaries and can surpass any kind of challenge,” she said.

For Vele, it had to be the moment one of the bride’s family talked about her, thinking she had left the building. “I discovered the bride was wearing a wet wedding dress and I touched on it because I was concerned. But as I was walking out, the friends and family started gossiping about me not knowing I was still in the house,” she says.

OPW’s winning formula

Khanyisa says the show has remained at the top of its game because of its unique factor of capturing Mzansi’s love stories. “The viewers are taken on a full journey of the couple’s story. We get to hear what their challenges were and how these were overcome, and then finally watch them walking down the aisle. It’s a very inspiring show that teaches us that love is real and that love is possible for everyone,” she said.

Vele believes the presenters form a big part of the winning formula. “Then the fashion aspect aids the formula because then the combination of the host and fashion keeps people wanting to see more,” she said.

When asked which wedding tradition remains their all-time favourite, Vele said it’s definitely the kiss, while Khanyisa mentioned the wedding step.
