Ahead of Mother’s Day this month,  Mzansi Magic premieres the aptly titled Mmangwana (loosely translated as ‘Mother of the Child’) on Saturday, 13 May at 19:30. Starring two strong female leads, screen veteran Baby Cele and sensational newcomer Makgotso M, the story centres around a turbulent mother-daughter relationship. Spesihle, a troubled young woman, battles to come to terms with the fact that her mother killed her father, an act for which she was sentenced to 12 years in jail. Can a daughter whose life was shattered in a moment find a way to understand, to trust and to forgive?

Notably the movie was written,  directed and filmed in its entirety by the 2016 M-Net Magic in Motion Academy interns, who recently graduated from the programme after a wide-ranging, year-long, work-readiness programme. Having seen three of their earlier productions debut on Mzansi Magic, Mmangwana marks their fourth and final creation with the 19 interns showcasing their hard-earned skills in an emotionally-charged drama.

Speaking for M-Net, CEO Yolisa Phahle says that the movies represent the success of the company’s intensive Corporate Social Investment project. “Our Magic in Motion Academy interns have, to date, produced eight Original Films over two years.  This is significant for us because it demonstrates how exposure to industry experts , the opportunity to learn and access to funds can empower a new generation of TV professionals. Our interns rose to the challenge of making primetime content for broadcast and, given the positive reaction to their last film Sofa Silahlane, we’re delighted to be showing Mmangwana this weekend.”

For Nikita Morare the M-Net Magic in Motion intern who directed Mmangwana, the experience was unforgettable. “To have one’s first director credit for a movie screened on the hugely popular Mzansi Magic, that’s just incredible. The entire class worked very hard to bring this story to life and we hope that audiences will support it and us by tuning in.”

So make sure you catch Mmangwana, a heart-wrenching tale of love, loss and family. Exclusive to Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161).
