Set on the backdrop of the taxi industry, with two young lovers, torn apart by a century old feud between two powerful families. From a valley long divided by too little resources the bitter feud continues in Egoli, the city of gold as the Zungu’s seek to build their fortune. The promise of riches and old cycles of revenge tears them apart but one man’s quest for reconciliation & peace leads them all to understand that they can prosper together. Isibaya, depicts the everyday struggle for wealth and power between the Zungus and the Ndlovus. This struggle is reflected in the title – Isibaya; meaning (The Kraal , where a herd of cattle and goats are kept). Shadrack

Father of Lerato. Insightful, world-weary, speaker of truth. A warrior who has lost the will to fight. Yard manager at the Zungu’s and close friend and confidante to Mpiyakhe, he too has a vision for peace and reconciliation in the Valley. Undeniably attracted to MKabayi.

Sibusiso (S’bu) Ndlovu

Samson’s youngest son, is as determined and stubborn as his father. A natural leader, with integrity. S’bu is charming, articulate and smart. Being groomed to take over the taxi business from his dad, he is willing to make whatever sacrifice is needed. But when he falls in love with Thandeka his world is turned upside down.

Mandla Ndlovu

Brutal, jealous and corrupt younger brother of Samson. He lives and dies by the sword and believes that his brother is wrong to imagine that the peace negotiations will change anything.

Samson Ndlovu

Strong, fierce and calculating taxi owner from the West valley and principle voice in that taxi association. His smooth and seemingly reconciliatory manner, hides a man who is at the very top of a dangerous and corrupt business and there is nothing he will not do to stay there. But he is also a proud father. He believes in principles and family honour. He is a complex villain.

Lerato

Shadrack’s daughter. 16 year old, street smart and sassy. Dreams of a better life, glamour and love. Gives everyone a run for their money including her father who has sacrificed everything for her education. Fearless but wanting more from life.

Jackson

A charming, smart and smooth talking businessman. Snake in the grass, willing to do anything for personal profit.

Siphokasi Zungu

The oldest of Mpiyakhe’s wives, is a respected childless matriarch with an irreverent, slightly wicked, sense of humour and a secret smoking habit. Her astute but inexperienced business skills are put to the test when ‘the wives’ get a catering contract on the road construction project.

Jabulani (Jabu) Zungu

Mpiyakhe’s son and Zodwa’s brother. Dissolute, angry young-man, wastrel with a chip on his shoulder and wanna be musician. He is popular with girls, his charm and good looks get him out of trouble.

Thandeka Zungu

Mpiyakhe’s daughter. Well educated, modern city girl. She has been protected by her fathers position and money and is an innocent. She must face an unrequited love and fight for what she believes in. She is filled with a passion for science and discovering the universe, but knows nothing about those living in it.

Iris Zungu

Mercantile, calculating and manipulative ‘city wife’ of Mpiyakhe. Married for money, power and position. She is willing to do almost anything to retain and grow those things. Morally questionable and deeply flawed.

Mkabayi Zungu

Mpiyakhe’s sister. Pugnacious, abrasive, tough talking matriarch of the family in KwaZulu-Natal. Is forced into a more high-profile public and political involvement with the taxi business. Still mourns a lost love and struggles to show her softer side. She learns to lead and find time to listen to the people around her.

Mpiyakhe Zungu

High profile taxi boss. Savvy political player and leader. He has a ‘road to damascus’ moment when his daughter is nearly killed in a taxi shootout. He realizes violence is not a viable alternative and envisions a new peace. As a young man Mpiyakhe was a consummate stick fighter and very popular with women.

Isibaya Review: Secret dalliances and power shifts

From a DNA results shocker, to a mysterious bludgeoning, Isibaya was chock-full of drama this week.

Zanele continued her secret dalliance with sexy bad boy, Thabiso and while Zweli was away on business, she found the courage to invite him to spend the night at Bhekifa’s townhouse.

Unfortunately for Zanele, Iris managed to convince Bhekifa that the only way for her to recover from her mystery illness is to move to Johannesburg.
As a result, Zanele was told to pack her bags and move to a hotel, which the chief will pay for, to make way for Iris and the baby.

While indulging her secret smoking habit behind the toilet, MaMthembu overheard a conversation between Melusi and Ding Ding, that proved Melusi is indeed the one who killed Sogaya’s goat. The thrashing she gave him will definitely not be forgotten any time soon. After all, she had spoken on his behalf in court and had helped him beat the case.

A heavily disguised Nkabinde surfaced in Johannesburg and managed to orchestrate a meeting with Lerato.

Nkabinde finally caught up with Mehlemamba and knocked him unconscious. Unfortunately, Mehlo doesn’t remember what happened. To cap a dramatic week, the eagerly anticipated DNA results were released. What do they prove? Sithole is indeed Bhekifa’s father, which means Somahhashi is not the rightful chief of the valley.

Isibaya Review: Hauntings and shady dealings

Nkabinde is back with a vengeance, MaNcwane's past has come back to haunt her and Zanele's life just got messier.

Melusi found himself in a heap of trouble after a neighbor accused him of killing his goat. After being hauled off to traditional court, a defiant MaMthembu spoke in his defence.

— Portia Tshego Loeto (@PortiaLoeto) November 4, 2014

MaNcwane’s past dealings came back to haunt her in a major way when Qhude’s daughter Sihle, showed up at her doorstop, looking for a job. MaDlamini and MaMthembu stepped in and managed to convince the family matriarch to give Sihle a chance. Despite the wives being impressed with Sihle’s conduct, MaNcwane does not seem to trust her fully.

After showing up in Mehlemamba’s dreams, Sunday Nkabinde took things a step further and tracked him down.

S’khaleni and Pam finally had a talk and decided to patch things up. However, in a conversation with Lerato, Pam insisted she and S’khaleni are just friends.

Zanele found herself in a fix when an old acquaintance showed up unexpectedly. Instead of pushing Thabiso away, Zanele spent the night with him, resulting in an awkward run-in between the duo and Bhekifa at the club.

Isibaya Review: Two leave the Zungu household

A captured, limbless Sunday managed to escape from the Zungus. The jury is still out on whether Mehlemamba helped him or not. Fezile tried to open Mpiyakhe up to the possibility that Mehlo may have been bewitched by Sunday to assist him, but he would not hear any of it.

The warlock managed to secure a hideout in the chief’s homestead in exchange he gave him some information about his father.

This certainly put a spanner in the works because based on Sunday’s dreams about his father, Bhekifa eased up on the hostility towards Sithole, even calling him ‘Baba’. Not that he was being genuine of course, it's all part of a bigger plan to extract even more information about his family’s killers. But is Sithole fooled?

After confessing to Phumelele and confronting Fezile without any success, a hurt Qondi packed her bags, left a good bye note and went on her way to some unknown destination.

But the very same people that were mad at her were the very first ones to lament her absence:

Young, naive Melusi continued to unknowingly wreck havoc. He managed to convince Ding Ding to borrow him his taxi which came back with blood stains. This ultimately earned him a meeting with the chief. We will all have to keep our eyes glued to Isibaya to see what the outcome of this meeting will be.
